Most of us know what it feels like to watch someone we care about struggle, and not know what to say. We want to help, but we worry we will say the wrong thing, so sometimes we say nothing at all.
The Friendship Bench was built on a different idea: that ordinary people, given the right tools, can do extraordinary things for one another. Ordinary people can learn to sit with others in their hardest moments, and that this simple act can change lives. If you have ever wanted to be that person for someone, this June there are two ways to begin.
Start with the Masterclass
The Masterclass on Friendship Bench Principles is delivered by our Founder, Prof. Dixon Chibanda. In this one-hour virtual class, Prof. Chibanda introduces you to the core approaches that have shaped the Friendship Bench over the past two decades. You will develop practical skills to build genuine human connection.
Whether you are exploring the model for the first time or considering bringing it to your own community, the Masterclass is the perfect place to begin.
How to join: Submit your expression of interest, and you will receive a reference number by email. From there, simply choose an available Masterclass date and reserve your seat.
Upcoming dates:

All sessions run from 17:00–18:00 CAT, online. Seats are limited.
Then Go Deeper: Friendship Bench Level 1 Training
Facilitated by Ethel Manda, Global Master Trainer and Supervisor of Community Healers, this two-day virtual training brings together lessons from the last 20 years of community-based research in an effort to provide individuals with all the tools necessary to connect with and support one another. Through open-mindedness, active listening and living values - together we can create safe spaces where everyone can find a sense of belonging and enhanced mental well-being.
Upcoming dates:
16–17 June 2026
18–19 June 2026
29–30 June 2026
All sessions run from 15:00–18:00 CAT, online. Seats are limited.
Who Is This For?
Whether you are a healthcare worker, teacher, community volunteer, caregiver, faith leader, manager, student, or simply someone who wants to support others, these sessions are designed for you.
Take the First Step
The bench started in one community in Zimbabwe. Today, it has been replicated in communities around the world because communities decided they wanted to be part of something that brings us closer to one another.
If you have ever wanted to make a difference in someone’s life, this is where that journey begins. We would love for you to join us.
